Description

These Halloween Sugar Cookies (Lofthouse Style!) are a delightful combination of soft texture and festive flavor. Perfectly sweet with a simple frosting, they’re ideal for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • orange & purple & green food coloring
  • halloween sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, then stir in the sour cream until well combined.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F when ready to bake.
  7. Roll the chilled dough out to about 1/4 inch thick, then use a 3-inch cookie cutter to cut out circles.
  8. Place the cookie cutouts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8-9 minutes. Aim for a barely baked texture for softness.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting them.
  10. For the buttercream frosting, beat the butter until fluffy, then gradually mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  11. Add milk little by little until achieving a smooth, spreadable consistency; adjust with more milk as needed if too thick.
  12. Divide the frosting into three bowls and color each portion with food coloring as desired.
  13. Frost each cookie using a piping bag or offset spatula and top with your chosen Halloween sprinkles.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial for achieving the perfect texture.
Feel free to customize colors of the frosting for your Halloween theme.
