Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups apple cider
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup oil, canola or vegetable
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 tbsp apple sauce, unsweetened
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tbsp apple cider
- 1 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, warm the apple cider over medium heat until it simmers.
- Stir occasionally and reduce the cider until it measures 1/2 cup, about 10-15 minutes. Let it cool fully.
- In a bowl, combine all dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, whisk together the sugars, egg, cooled apple cider, vanilla, oil, milk, and unsweetened apple sauce until well mixed.
- Combine the wet and dry mixtures, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix the batter.
- Preheat your frying oil to 375°F (190°C).
- Scoop batter into donut shapes and fry until golden, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Remove the donuts and drain on paper towels before coating with cinnamon sugar.
Notes
For a more intense flavor, you can use freshly pressed apple cider.
Ensure the cider is completely cool before mixing the wet ingredients to prevent cooking the egg.
These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days.
